StreetCred Studios, inspired by the success of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, began with a daring pitch at the 2015 Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines’ Ignite Innovation Challenge, resulting in an award of $30,000 in seed capital. With only one dedicated full-time staff member running this pioneer social enterprise, StreetCred Studios undertook a mighty mission to serve and employ struggling young people while producing a quality product.
Launched in 2016 as a social enterprise to lift employment obstacles for young adults with criminal backgrounds, StreetCred Studios is a full-service screen printing shop. Production assistants learn design, entrepreneurship and work skills that will help them find a better-paying, career-track job in the community. These production assistants are mentored in our studio for 3-6 months and launched into their career pathways or higher education with ongoing love and support from ArtForce Iowa staff.
Our studio manager, Michelle Jackson, was one of ArtForce Iowa’s LiftOff participants, and she was promoted to studio manager after three months as a production assistant. Michelle runs the studio with two or three young adults, and together they handle the quotes, orders, client meetings, photo and video shoots, and live screen printing at festivals and events. If you give us a call, ask for Michelle. Her phone manner is our fave.
How We Work
You request our services.
We offer screen printing, photography and videography. No job is too small or too big. You name the job. We can print shirts for any occasion, and then come and cover the event with high quality photography, videography, and video-editing services too. Our prices are competitive.
Young people with difficult backgrounds get to work.
Our workshop is staffed by court-involved young adults who need work experience. They earn wages while they train and work in our studio. Our goal is that every StreetCred production assistant pursues post-secondary education or acquires a better-paying job before leaving StreetCred Studios.
Profits go to our programs.
Every penny left after paying for operations goes to fund our suite of programs for at-risk youth in the city.
You get a great product.
We guarantee our quality. We provide screen printing services for t-shirts, hoodies, aprons, koozies, tote bags, and more. If you have questions about our screen printing services and the products we offer, contact us and we’d be happy to help you out.
If you’re interested in supporting our cause but aren’t in need of screen printing or photography services right now, we accept donations of any amount. If you believe in the mission behind the social enterprises of StreetCred and ArtForce Iowa, please help us continue to provide support to young adults working to set their lives up for success.
